8 paradoxical habits of wildly successful people

8 paradoxical habits of wildly successful people8 paradoxical habits of wildly successful peopleYou know what they say about opinions - everybody has one. If you want to see that truth in action, just Google characteristics of successful people. Some of the results will undoubtedly point to the famous Marshmallow Study at Stanford, which demonstrated that the ability to delay gratification is a key component of success. But thats far from the only theoryAccording to Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, it all comes down to mindset. She conducted a series of experiments that demonstrated that, while the average person sees their abilities as fixed assets, successful people have, what she calls, a growth mindset. In other words, successful people focus on self-improvement and overcoming challenges rather than seeing their mistakes as the products of insurmountable personal flaws. In another study conducted by Penn State and Duke, researchers assessed the social skills of 700 kindergartner s. Twenty years later, they followed up and discovered a strong correlation between social skills and success. The children with the best social skills were more likely to have earned a college degree and to hold a full-time job, while the kids who struggled with social skills in kindergarten were more likely to get arrested, binge drink, and apply for public housing. And the list goes on and on. So, what is happening here? Why are there so many different theories, complete with the science to back them up, about the traits that contribute to success? I think its because most wildly successful people are complex- so complex that many of their defining qualities are paradoxical.Rather than an either/or set of static characteristics, theyre more likely to demonstrate both. This is a key to their success. Here are some examples of what Im referring to.Theyre polite, yet completely unafraid to rock the boatSuccessful people are, what I like to call, graciously disruptive. Theyre never sa tisfied with the status quo. Theyre the ones who constantly ask, What if? and Why not? Theyre not afraid to challenge conventional wisdom, yet they dont disrupt things for the sake of being disruptive they do it to make things better. Still, theyre polite and considerate, and they dont draw attention to other peoples mistakes just to humiliate them. However, that doesnt mean they sit back and let people wander off in the wrong direction. They wont hesitate to speak up when its time to change course.Theyre deeply passionate, yet rational and objective about their workSuccessful people are passionate about their work, but they dont let it skew their thinking. They have the ability to step back and look at their work with a critical eye and to accept their mistakes. If its a disaster, theyll admit it, because they realize that its better to try something different than to put out something subpar with their name on it. That sense of detachment also allows them to accept feedback from o thers without taking it personally.Theyre convergent and divergent thinkersConvergent thinking is whats measured by IQ tests rational thinking that typically results in a single right answer. Divergent thinking, on the other hand, is less precise. Its about generating ideas and asking questions that have no solid right or wrong answers. Both are important. No matter how high your IQ is, youre not going to be successful if you cant think outside of the proverbial box. On the other hand, you need rational thinking skills to correctly judge whether your ideas have merit. Thats why this particular paradox is so important.Theyre both energetic and calmSuccessful people seem to have limitless energy when it comes to doing the things theyre passionate about, but they arent frantic. They can keep that energy under control. They work hard and focus on the task at hand with devoted concentration, but theyre so smooth that they make it look both easy and fun. Some people are so energetic that theyre hyperactive and unfocused and constantly bouncing from one thing to another. Successful people know how to harness their energy so that it works in the service of progress and doesnt undermine it.They like to work and playSuccessful people personify the often-repeated quote, Do what you love, and youll never work a day in your life. Because they love what they do, they find brainstorming, problem-solving, and grinding out tough projects thought-provoking, engaging, and deeply satisfying. And though they take their work very seriously, the enjoyment and gratification they derive from it blurs the common demarcation between work and play.Theyre ambivertsSuccessful people are comfortable acting in ways that amplify their introversion and extraversion, depending on what the situation calls for. They can sit in the back of a conference room and silently listen to whats going on, or they can go up on stage, grab a microphone, and engage a huge crowd- and they look just as comfortab le doing one as they do the other.Theyre nave and smartNo one would argue that intelligence isnt an important part of success, but many successful people also have a childlike lack of awareness (or maybe its a lack of respect) for the type of constraints that other people blindly accept. Theyre not limited by what other people tell them is possible.Theyre both humble and proudTaking pride in your work is absolutely essential for success, but successful people know they wouldnt be where they are without the people who came before them and those theyve worked with along the way. They know that they didnt achieve their success all on their own, and because theyre OK with that, they dont have anything to prove. Thats why so many incredibly successful people end up coming across as grounded and humble when you meet them in person.Bringing it all togetherThe reason that there are so many different opinions on what traits are necessary for success- and the reason that so many of them contr adict each other- is that successful people are complex. They have a wide variety of paradoxical skills that they call upon as needed, like a mechanic with a well-stocked toolbox.Travis Bradberryis the co-author ofEmotional Intelligence 2.0and the cofounder ofTalentSmart. This column first appeared at LinkedIn.

Meals In Air Force Basic Military Training And After

Meals In Air Force Basic Military Training And AfterMeals In Air Force Basic Military Training And AfterThe Air Force recently developed the Food Transformation Initiative (FTI) in order to enhance Air Force food service quality, variety and availability while maintaining constant learning and training program for Air Force cooks. The FTI is designed to enhance the menu, quality of food nutrition, and meet the servicemens expectations of what a good meal should be. On Air Force Bases, to include Basic Military Training (BMT), the food is served hot every meal when notlage in the field.Plus, you have a variety of other options such as a sandwich bar, a salad bar with many fruits and vegetables, and a letzter gang bar. This is a typical cafeteria style eating establishment, but with food that is considered rather good. You will also have a variety of drinks to choose from. Typical coffee, sodas, water, milk, chocolate milk, juices, and Gatorade type sports drinks. Breakfast Meals T he most important meal of the day is also one of the best in the Air Force. For breakfast, there will be eggs toorder, scrambled eggs, hash browns, sausage/bacon, pancakes/french toast, juice, milk, cereals, coffee, and fruits. Lunch and Dinner For the other two meals of the day, there are two lines full hot bar meals, and a snack bar. A full meal will have the choice of two entrees (example, meatloaf or chicken). But you will also have daily options like hamburgers, grilled cheese, chicken ala king, veal, pizza you name it.There will be several different kinds ofvegetables each day as well. The snack bar line has hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken, sandwiches, chili, french fries, etc. There is also a salad bar, and letzter gangs, including cakes and ice cream (if you T.I. says you can have sweets). The cafeteria-style serving line will begin with the hot food bar. If you do not like anything or need more food, you can also grab a few pieces of bread and make peanut butter and jelly (or banana) sandwiches at every meal too. However, once out of BMT, the food is considered so good, that many military members who eat at Air Force dining halls have to double down on their physical fitness in order to stay in fighting shape. It is easy to gain weight as you age, graduate challenging highly physical training programs, can access the dessert bar, and have more relaxed eating conditions. During BMT, the recruits cannot drink soda or access the dessert bar. Meals At Basic Military Training Many people tend to lose weight when at Basic Military Training as you will be on your feet all day movingand burning calories at a higher than normal rate. The added PBJ sandwich can add extra calories to your meal and help you maintain body weight as well as provide energy for the long day of basic training. At Basic Military Training, it is recommended to eat as much as you can and add calories where possible.Rice and extra breadis a good addition to nearly all meals and is available near daily for lunch and dinner. However, the biggest concerns for recruits is getting dehydrated especially in the hot summer months of training. You will be required to drink three glasses of fluid at every meal (Gatorade, water, juice) before you rise from the table. Even though the meals atAir Force Basic Military Trainingare really good, the mealtime environment is fairly stressful as it is a time when the Military Training Instructors (MTIs), who are Staff Sergeants and above, start communicating with you. Typically, if your uniform is squared away, the MTIs will keep searching for the next victim. However, sometimes, it is just your unlucky day and the good food you selected in the cafeteria line will be eaten is a less than the peaceful atmosphere. Expect to be asked military knowledge questions if you get stopped by MTIs in the chow hall. If you know your stuff, you will pass and survive another meal at BMT. For the first couple of weeks, your meal-time will be limited. Youll only have a few minutes from the time the last person in your flight gets to the table to finish your meal. Youll learn not to waste time, and eat fast. However, after the first couple of weeks, youll have more time for meals. During The BEASTtraining exercise, youll also get a chance to sample MREs (Meals, Ready to Eat). These are, however, not the preferred choice for any military member if given the option to eat in an Air Force Dining Facility.

Need a Resume Makeover Heres Where to Start

Need a Resume Makeover Heres Where to Start Need a Resume Makeover Heres Where to Start Your resume is your ticket into the interview process. If its not working as well as you hoped and youre not getting calls for interviews then its time for a makeover. As one of the top resume writing services, ResumeSpice can help. To start, here are 5 key areas to focus on and freshen up your resume1 Length.Do you have two years of experience, but your resume is three or four pages long? Thats a problem. If youre in the entry-level range, then cut your resume down to a page. If youre a more skilled professional with 5+ years of experience then you can submit a resume thats two pages. Heres a good guide on how long should your resume should be.2 Style. Is your font size tiny? Are margins tight? Style matters when it comes to your resume. Thats why you need to use a font thats easy to read and professional So, skip the Comic Sans and instead use a font like Cambria, Calibri, or Times New Roman .In addition, make sure your resume doesnt look too cramped. You want it to be as easy as possible for hiring managers to scan, which means one-inch margins and a reasonable amount of space between each line of text.3 Format. The best resume format to use is a reverse chronological one. This is where you list your most recent job, and then end with your oldest experience. The same order should be used for your education credentials.4 Accomplishments. If youre simply focusing on tasks, and not talking about your track record, then youre not going to stand out to hiring managers. Within each fleck youve listed, think about and include at least one major accomplishment that youre especially proud of and that aligns with the position to which youre applying. Quantify these with numbers such as time saved, costs reduced, or profits earned wherever you can.5 Keywords.Todays applications and resumes are often scanned by an applicant tracking system before human eyes see them. Its therefore important to include keywords and phrases from the job posting. How to Use Online Classes to Help Your Career - The Muse

How to Use Online Classes to Help Your Career - The MuseHow to Use Online Classes to Help Your Career Its something youve probably heard a decent amount You should take an verbunden class, Thats what online classes are for, Online courses are a great resource. But what exactly are you getting yourself into by enrolling? Why exactly is it a useful tool? Is it even worth it? Trust me, youre leid the only one with these questions. Thats why I spoke to real, live people whove taken classes before to get the real scoop on what they entail. And what I learned is that theyre mora than just worthwhile- they can be complete game changers. But lets back up and start at the beginningWhat Kinds of Classes Are Therbeie?Theres an online class for everything. Seriously, you can take courses on understanding how dogs think, mastering meditation, or even how to become a vegetarian (in case you dont know what that means). But theres also so many others that are relevant enough to put on your resume (un less, of course, you actually work in those fields). Some sites offer courses in every genre, while others focus on specific skill sets such as software education or only feature classes from real universities. You can browse full-time and part-time courses, long videos and short clips, and interactive projects and web conversations. Some cost money or charge you monthly, but a lot are free. Overwhelmed? Dont worry- weve already curated the best classes for your career right here on The Muse. We have courses on job searching, finding your passion, building your brand, negotiating an offer, and even ones on marketing, social media, copywriting, public speaking, and programming- all taught by experts and coming from the best online education websites out there. Youre welcome. There Are So Many Options, How Do I Choose One?I dont think you can go wrong in making your decision. In fact, you could very easily realize that a class youre taking isnt what you expected. Thats OK- you dont hav e to finish it (this isnt high school). But with that being said, if youre spending money and time, you want to put it toward something worthwhile. So, check out reviews by previous students, ask colleagues for recommendations, and read the course descriptions, some of which will have introductory videos available. These are great indicators of whether or not you can connect to the class and the teacher.Who Even Takes Them?Anyone and everyone- recent graduates, career changers, job seekers, managers, CEOs. The bottom line is that everyone has something he or she needs to work on, whether its a skill, a side gig, a personal attribute, or a bad habit. Can I Manage One on Top of a Full-Time Job and Social Life? The short answer is yes, yes you can. Your day is what you make it, and if this is important enough to you, youll make time for it. Account Executive Kimberly McNallys currently getting her masters in technology management, on top of her position here at The Muse, and the beauty of taking her courses online is that she didnt have to quit her day job to do it. But, she states, You have to be able to make sacrifices. You shouldnt let areas of your life get altered by it, but of course youll have less time to socialize. Figuring out how to separate school and work takes willpower and drive. She advises that you take a look at your current schedule and see whether or not you can manage your time effectively before you even sign up. But you also have the choice of how much time you want to spend on it- theres so much flexibility You can enroll in a full certification program like McNally, or, if you dont think youll have the energy to log in daily, choosing to take individual courses an hour or two a week can be just as effective (without taking up all your free time). Can I Use Them to Help My Job Search?Several people I spoke with told me they definitely helped them connect with their interviewer, and for some, it even landed them the job. As part of his intervie w process, Muse Content Manager James Mayr met with a member of the engineering team, and because he had taken coding classes, he was able to carry on a great conversation- despite being here for a completely different role. Similarly, Joanne Chevalier, a full-stack engineer, interviewed at The Muse after moving from France, and by providing examples from her online classes, she was able to prove her qualifications to transition from back-end to full-stack.And Jimmy Marsanico, a data scientist, used skills listed in job descriptions as an indicator that maybe he should study up and take a course- just in case that was the make-or-break factor After grad school, I took a course in Pandas (which is a tool used in Python-coding for data analysis) to help during my interview process, including my interview here It wasnt something that I used right away at work, nor in my interviews, yet so many job requirements had mentioned it- which is what made me decide to take it in the first place .Overall, it can only help your job search. When Muse Career Coach Evangelia Leclaire meets with clients who believe they are underqualified for a role, I tell my clients to not let what you lack limit you from going after what you want. And online courses are a great start Future employers value continuing education and professional development. By enrolling in a relevant course and positioning it within the education section of the resume and in future interviews, youre demonstrating that you take initiative to improve professionally. Employers love hiring people who are resourceful and who take action to stay ahead of the curve and gain a competitive edge, states Leclaire. The thing is, just saying I took so and so course wont show youre qualified. Its the stuff you learned and created in that class that matter- so focus on that in your resume, cover letter, and interview. And speaking of that How Do I List the Classes on My Resume?Youve taken a class and want to show it off to pot ential employers- great But where does it go? And how specific should you get when talking about it?It definitely depends on the kinds of classes you took and the jobs youre applying for. (Read tailor your resume) Laurie Pickard, founder of No-Pay MBA, suggests that you keep the list of courses short, and confine them to a single, small area, such as a Professional Training section under your work history. Also, you dont need to bother listing introduction courses unless theyre separate from your current role- taking an Introduction to Python course will undermine your credibility if your current position is Senior Developer. How Do They Come Into Play When Im Switching Careers? You know what youre missing when youre looking to make a career change- a skill on your resume, a skill in real life, knowledge on a particular topic. Online courses could (at least partially) fill that gap- especially since youre usually only short a few requirements. But even more so what classes are good at is helping you figure out if you even want to make the change. Or, where you want to go next. You might discover after taking one writing course that journalism isnt really for you. Or, you might take a social media class, and then another, and then your excitement for it grows and all you want to do is work in marketing. Awesome- now you know youre ready. Can They Help Me in My Current Job?Editor-in-Chief Adrian Granzella Larssen has a great story on how one experience continues to influence her career. One of the online courses she took was a beauty writing class, and an assignment was to write an article about tweezing your eyebrows without using the words tweeze or eyebrows more than once. Even today she uses this tactic in anything she writes- being aware of word repetition to craft stronger writing pieces. Its like high school- your teacher says one thing and it just happens to stick with you for years and years. Learning onlines no different, and the best part is you can platt l up any new lesson anytime you want.So if you have some free time, if you want to improve the quality of your work, or if you want to better understand how to use your companys resources, it might be worth signing up.In short, online classes are pretty darn useful. They wont guarantee you a job, and they wont instantly get you that promotion or raise- but if those are your goals, theyre an awesome way to get started on accomplishing that.Photo of woman typing courtesy of Morsa Images/Getty Images.

Santas little helpers

Santas little helpers Santas little helpersPosted December 17, 2013, by Julia Watters Its Christmas morning and you wake up incredibly early. You sneak downstairs and grab your stocking and then you put it on, along with the rest of your uniform. And then you go to work. Old Saint Nick himself only has to work on Christmas Eve, but there are plenty of poor souls who have to punch in the time card on Christmas Day. Theyre the people who make sure the wheels are still turning while the rest of us are stuffing our face with, well, stuffing. Working on Christmas means mora to some than just earning penalty rates. We spoke to a few people to find out why they dont mind spending their Christmas at work. Holiday health One profession that doesnt always get a holiday is healthcare and nurses are on the frontline. Jess Lovel is a nurse at Sydneys Westmead Hospital and spent Christmas Day brde year caring for the patients on her ward. Jess family is based in Victoria, so Jess welchesnt ab le to spend Christmas morning with them before heading off to work. Heres what Jess had to say about doing the Christmas shift I thought initially that working Christmas Day would be particularly hard. Being a long way from loved ones in a large city, it felt very lonely waking on Christmas morning. However, many of my friends who are also nurses were experiencing the same feelings, and to have that support made it easier to cope I think. I find that nurses, without knowing it, tend to make the best of difficult situations. So together we all made Christmas enjoyable and fun within the hospital walls. Decorating the ward and making Christmas treats to share among the staff and patients while Christmas carols played softly in the background made for a cosy atmosphere. I also continued to remind myself that I was surrounded by very unwell patients, some of whom were dying, and it was particularly important to not dwell on the fact that I was away from my family but to attempt to brighten up and bring cheer to our patients and their families. To know that I have made someone smile or laugh, especially on Christmas, is the best gift I could have received. Christmas cheer Erica Myers-Davis works as the General Manager, Fundraising and Community Relations, for Prahan Mission in Melbourne. If you think organising Christmas lunch for your family can be hectic, Erica spends Christmas Day each year coordinating 50 volunteers and hosting lunch for 400 people. This year is the fourth year Erica will selflessly spend her Christmas with those in need, and shes excited that the Governor of Victoria and his wife will be joining them this year. The perks are the sense of satisfaction one gets from providing people with joy and love and giving gifts to the children, who often dont get anything else. The downside is that I start at 7am and finish at 6pm, and am usually too tired to celebrate later on with my in-laws. The power of Christmas Rachel Power and her husband run Waterfalls Caf and Gallery in the heart of Tassies Mt Field National Park. Last year they chose to open for a couple of hours on Christmas Day for the benefit of those travelling in the area. Their caf is an hour out of Hobart and 30 minutes from the nearest supermarket, so its a huge benefit for those who are staying in the area. They only ran a limited service as they refused to ask their staff to work Christmas, yet Rachel and her husband were still flat out all day. Despite this, they thoroughly enjoyed the festive atmosphere of their caf and were pleased to see holidaymakers enjoying the best possible visitor experience and making the most of their Christmas Day. This is one of the reasons we opened, teamed with the need to pay off our mortgage and the fact that we were cooking our Christmas dinner in the cafe kitchen while we worked. With three young children (10, eight and four), we did weigh up the time away from them while we worked on this special family day. We found th at they enjoyed playing with their new toys, and were actually a big help on the day too ResourcesMy first resumeCover letter for my first jobCareer Insider StoriesShelley Lask - Body Positive Health & FitnessInterested in becoming a?Human Resources OfficerGeneral ManagerBusiness ManagerAccountantOffice AdministratorPopular Career Searcheshow to become a tour guide in australiacareer opportunities after a masters in public healthhow to become a cooking teacher in australiagov funded nursing coursesgovernment funded social work courses melbourne CoursesBachelor of Social WorkEnquire Online Enquire OnlineCertificate III in Health AdministrationEnquire Online Enquire OnlineBachelor of Criminal JusticeEnquire Online Enquire OnlineCertificate III in Allied Health AssistanceEnquire Online Enquire OnlineJulia WattersRelated ArticlesBrowse moreBreaking through the glass ceilingSocial mediaOPINION The price of being socialSocial media.
